Work near a window, not under the ceiling light
Soft daylight from the side of a window is the most flattering light most homes have. Turn off the overhead bulb — it casts hard shadows under the eyes and turns skin an odd colour.
Prop the phone and use the timer or a remote
A stack of books, a shelf, or a cheap tripod. Set a 10-second timer or burst mode and take a run of frames while you actually do something — making coffee, reading on the sofa, dancing in the kitchen.
